Singapore facts

Since it's national day today, I shall talk about some facts about the place we live in - Singapore.

Have you ever wondered how Holland Village got its name?

Well, many thought that it must be due to some infuence from the country Holland but... no.
Holland Road was named after Hugh Holland,who was an architect, amateur actor and most importantly, an early resident in the holland village area. Subsequently, Holland Village was named as well.



Do you know the evolution of Singapore's worldclass university - National University of Singapore?

It started out by being a medical school in 1904 before it's name was changed to King Edward VII Medical school after they received funds from the King Edward VII Memorial Fund.

Raffles College was established in 1913 and the 2 schools merged to form University of Malaya in 1949.

Legislation was passed in 1961 where the kuala lumper division continued the name of University of Malaya while the Singapore division renamed itself as the University of Singapore.

In 1980, Nanyang University and University of Singapore merged and formed the current National University of Singapore.




Did you know that Lee Kuan Yew had sung 4 different national anthems in his life?

1) God Save the Queen - British Colony
2) Kimigayo -  Japanese Occupation
3) Negaraku - Malaysia
4) Majulah Singapura - Singapore's official anthem.
